Be Heintzman Hope

Tio’tia:ke / Mooniyang and the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations.

Leaning into over a decade of breath, voice, and movement improvisation, this work asks: What forms of intelligence emerge when we honour the body as an ancestral technology with the capacity to puncture time and space?

The project draws from Be’s Toisanese family’s migration during the Gold Rush to explore “Gold Mountain” as both historical reality and diasporic mythology. The work deepens inquiry into inheritance as a site of alchemy, refusal, and repair — exploring how histories of assimilation and diasporic survival continue to live in the body across generations.

For Be, using tone as language is a diasporic act of resistance to languages lost in a crossing. The work approaches the voice as a living archive, carrying what remains when spoken language is interrupted by assimilation and finding side-ways to laugh, cry, sing, and speak.

Bio

Moving between sound and performance, Be bridges existential dance, expanded vocal techniques and experimental music. Their choreographic practice listens for what asks to be repeated as prayer, alchemy, refusal, or mantra. As a vocalist and dancer, they collaborate across performance works that weave together voice and movement through slippages in space and time. With the mission to connect people to their embodied wisdom and inherent luminosity, they have led workshops and classes across universities, festivals, artist-run studios, shelters, and community spaces across Turtle Island and Europe. They are the founder of The Singing Dancing Garden, a nomadic mystery school for song, dance, and the metaphysical arts.
